Nigeria has experienced a surge in crude oil theft incidents, with a staggering 226 cases reported in just one week, spanning from November 18 to 24, 2023.
This alarming data was released by the official X account of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) on Tuesday, November 28.
During this period, a wave of illicit activities unfolded across Nigeria’s oil-producing states, with Abia and Rivers states taking the lead with 39 recorded cases of illegal connections. The crackdown on unauthorized refining operations led to the discovery and destruction of 77 illegal refineries in Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, and Imo states. Furthermore, 21 instances of pipeline vandalism were detected in Rivers and Delta states.
Security efforts intensified as law enforcement uncovered nine vessels engaged in AIS infractions and seized 55 wooden boats transporting stolen crude in Delta state. Notably, 13 vehicles, including a truck disguising stolen crude as animal feed, were apprehended along the Warri-Patani road in Ughelli North, Delta state.

The situation also involved environmental consequences, as five oil spill sites and five illegal storage sites were identified in Rivers, Delta, Abia, and Bayelsa states. Additionally, one community issue and one vandalism act were brought to light during this tumultuous week.
In response to this surge in criminal activities, the NNPC Limited, through its Chief Financial Officer, Umar Ajiya, reiterated its commitment to combat crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism. Ajiya emphasized collaborative efforts within the industry, leading to the apprehension of 35 individuals involved in crude oil theft during the reviewed period.
Furthermore, Ajiya underscored NNPC Limited’s unwavering pledge to achieve zero tolerance for crude oil theft. In a statement dated November 22, he highlighted the primary objective of the security operation—to curtail crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism—aiming to bolster the nation’s energy security, increase crude oil production, and stimulate economic growth.
The recent surge in crude oil theft incidents raises concerns about Nigeria’s ability to meet its OPEC oil production quota by November 2023. As of November 28, chief OPEC correspondent Amena Bakr reported the possibility of updating production levels for Nigeria and Congo to equal the average production projected for 2024 by three independent sources: IHS, Wood Mackenzie, and Rystad Energy.
As Nigeria navigates this crisis, collaborative efforts, stringent law enforcement, and a renewed commitment from the NNPC Limited become imperative to secure the nation’s energy resources and maintain its standing in the global oil market.
