A new chapter in the history of Oyo town is set to unfold as Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade will be officially crowned as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo on Friday, April 4, 2025.
The much-anticipated event will mark the beginning of a fresh reign, steeped in the rich traditions and heritage of the Yoruba people.
P00reparations are in full swing, with collaborative efforts between the Alaafin’s palace and the Oyo State Government to ensure a grand and seamless occasion. Committees have been set up to handle logistics, cultural displays, and arrangements for the influx of dignitaries and attendees expected to witness this historic coronation.
Ahead of the event, Oba Owoade will participate in the traditional Alaafin Rituals, a period of seclusion designed to prepare him both physically and spiritually for his responsibilities. These sacred rites connect him with the legacy of past Alaafins and equip him to carry forward the mantle of leadership.
Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier approved the nomination of Oba Abimbola Owoade on January 10, 2025, following a thorough selection process by the Oyo Mesi, the council of kingmakers. On January 13, 2025, the governor presented the staff and instruments of office to the new monarch, officially recognizing him as the custodian of Oyo’s traditions and leadership.
The coronation promises to be a cultural spectacle, uniting people from across Nigeria and the diaspora in celebration of Yoruba heritage and leadership. Oba Owoade’s ascension heralds a new era of hope, unity, and progress for the people of Oyo and beyond.
