The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has extended the deadline for student loan applications for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The decision was made to allow more students to complete their applications after some institutions requested additional time.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the fund, Akintunde Sawyerr, announced the extension in a statement released on Thursday.
According to him, the extension is only for institutions that officially wrote to NELFUND asking for more time so that their eligible students can finish the application process.
Sawyerr explained that some institutions needed extra time because many students were still trying to complete their registration on the NELFUND student loan portal.
By granting the request, the organisation hopes to ensure that no qualified student misses the opportunity to benefit from the programme.
He also reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting students across Nigeria who are facing financial challenges while trying to pursue higher education.
According to him, the student loan programme was created to remove financial barriers that prevent many young Nigerians from attending tertiary institutions.
Students in the affected institutions have therefore been advised to take advantage of the extension and complete their applications as soon as possible through the official NELFUND portal.
They are also encouraged to carefully follow the application guidelines to avoid errors that could delay the processing of their requests.
NELFUND stressed that the programme is designed to provide transparent and sustainable financial support for students in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country.
The fund also stated that it remains committed to fairness, accountability, and equal access for all eligible students who wish to benefit from the scheme.
The extension is expected to help more students successfully apply for the loan and continue their education without serious financial difficulties.
Disbursement would be made anytime from now.
