In a bid to prevent a potential economic shutdown, the Minister of Labour, Employment, and Productivity, Simon Lalong, has initiated urgent talks with leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC). This move comes as the NLC and TUC announced plans for a nationwide strike following the assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero.

On Monday, the NLC and TUC instructed their members to commence mobilisation for the strike, emphasizing their commitment to sustaining the industrial action until “government at all levels wake up to their responsibility,” according to TUC President Festus Osifo.

In response to these developments, Minister Lalong has convened a meeting with the union leaders, scheduled for Tuesday morning. The discussions are anticipated to address the grievances and explore possible resolutions to avert the looming nationwide strike.

The decision for the strike was made during an extraordinary National Executive Council meeting last Tuesday in Abuja, where the NLC and TUC condemned the brutalisation of NLC National President Joe Ajaero in Imo State. The Organised Labour has expressed outrage, accusing the former Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Mohammed Barde, of complicity in the recent attack on Ajaero in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
