The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning to airlines and the general public about a rising dust haze that could affect flight operations and daily life in northern Nigeria.
According to the agency’s daily weather forecast obtained by Leadership, a large dust plume has been observed over Chad and Niger Republic.
This dust is expected to be carried southwards into Nigeria by strong northerly winds blowing at around 800 meters above the ground, with speeds between 25 and 30 knots.
NiMet explained that the thick haze could reduce horizontal visibility to 1,000 meters or less, posing potential risks for air travel and road transportation. The northern states expected to be most affected include Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, and Borno.
In its advisory, the agency urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports and flight documentation from NiMet to plan their operations safely. Pilots and airlines are advised to exercise caution to avoid accidents and ensure smooth flight schedules during the dust event.
NiMet also warned that people with asthma, bronchitis, or other respiratory conditions should take special care during this period. The agency recommended that the public limit outdoor activities, use protective masks where possible, and avoid exposure to dusty conditions to reduce health risks.
This latest warning highlights the seasonal impact of dust haze on northern Nigeria and underscores the importance of monitoring weather updates regularly.
Both travelers and residents are encouraged to stay informed and follow safety measures as recommended by NiMet to minimize disruptions and protect health during this weather phenomenon.
