London and Manchester commuters are on edge as reports of potential bedbug sightings on public transport have emerged, prompting fears of a widespread infestation reminiscent of France.
A TikTok user recently shared a video showcasing an unidentified insect crawling over her legs on public transport, urging Transport for London (TfL) to take action.
While the eight-second clip raised concerns, TfL stated it was unaware of any bedbug outbreak but assured they would closely monitor the situation.
“hey@FirstBusnews your 59 to oldham mumps has bedbugs i suggest you do something about this quickly lol.”
The company replied, asking the social media user to share more information so that the sighting could be reported.
An expert also questioned whether the insect was flat enough to be a bedbug.
Following the London incident, a passenger on a First Bus in Manchester posted a photo of a bug on the window on social media, requesting immediate attention.
The company swiftly responded, asking for more information to address the situation.
First Manchester wrote:
“This is really concerning to see, and we do apologise for this. Were you able to get the fleet number so we can report this to our depot management team? If not, please could you confirm the stop you boarded from, and the time? Thanks.”
The passenger replied:
“Hi i unfortunately didn’t get the board number however, I boarded the bus at about 2:45 from piccadilly and got off at the barrow hill road stop going towards waterloo road at about 15:00.”
Though it remains unconfirmed whether the insects spotted were indeed bedbugs, Brits have been on high alert since France grappled with large-scale infestations, leading to school closures and significant pest control efforts. The Eurostar, a vital link between the UK and France, has intensified “preventative treatments” to prevent the spread of these pests.
France has reported that approximately a tenth of its households have faced bedbug problems in recent years, necessitating costly and repeated pest control measures.

These blood-sucking insects have been sighted in various locations, including the Paris metro, high-speed trains, and Charles De Gaulle airport. However, Paris transport operator RATP has not officially confirmed bedbug presence on its services.
