China has introduced a new Mandarin language learning programme to strengthen its relationship with African countries and encourage closer cultural ties.

The programme was launched during the opening of the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges. It aims to make it easier for Africans to learn Mandarin while promoting cultural understanding between China and Africa.

Programme coordinator and ST Guide Channel manager, Ms Liu, said Mandarin is becoming an important tool for building mutual understanding, creating career opportunities, and strengthening cultural connections.

She explained that the programme, called “Hello Chinese,” is designed to make learning Mandarin simple and enjoyable for people at all levels.

According to Liu, the programme has four main parts. These include teaching new vocabulary through everyday situations, helping learners use the language in practical ways, and encouraging natural learning through real-life experiences.

The programme will also highlight the work of Confucius Institutes across Africa by showcasing their courses, cultural events, and teaching methods adapted to local communities.

Liu added that the China-Africa People-to-People Exchanges platform will allow people from both regions to share their experiences of living or working in China and Africa, encouraging greater understanding between different cultures.

Another part of the programme, “My Story with Chinese,” will feature Africans who have benefited from learning Mandarin and show how the language has helped them in their education, careers, and personal lives.

China believes the initiative will strengthen cultural and language ties between Africa and China, bringing people from both regions closer together through education and exchange.
