FIFA is not expected to take disciplinary action against Argentina players who celebrated their dramatic 2-1 victory over England with a banner referencing the Falkland Islands after the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi final.

The development comes as a major boost for the South American champions ahead of Sunday’s highly anticipated World Cup final against Spain, with reports indicating that no player is likely to face suspension or any form of punishment.

Argentina booked their place in the final after producing a remarkable late comeback against England in a thrilling encounter. The Three Lions looked set for victory after Anthony Gordon gave them the lead and held their advantage for much of the match.

However, Argentina responded strongly in the closing stages. Midfielder Enzo Fernandez brought his side level in the 85th minute, sparking hopes of another famous comeback. Just when extra time appeared inevitable, Lautaro Martinez rose highest to head home a Lionel Messi cross in the 92nd minute, sealing a dramatic victory and sending Argentina supporters into celebration.

Following the final whistle, players and members of the coaching staff gathered on the pitch to celebrate reaching another World Cup final. During the celebrations, several members of the squad were seen holding a banner bearing the message, “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” which translates to “The Falklands are Argentine.”

Among those reportedly photographed with the banner were Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez, Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez and former Tottenham Hotspur star Giovani Lo Celso.

The message quickly attracted attention because of the long standing dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas. The issue remains politically sensitive and has been a source of tension between the two countries for decades.

FIFA regulations strictly prohibit players, officials and teams from displaying political, religious or personal messages during World Cup matches and related activities. Article 34.3 of the tournament regulations specifically bans the display of political slogans before, during and after games.

Despite those rules, reports suggest that FIFA is not considering sanctions against the Argentina squad. This means Lionel Messi and his teammates are expected to be fully available for the World Cup final against Spain.

With the controversy unlikely to affect their preparations, Argentina can now focus entirely on Sunday’s showdown as they attempt to retain the World Cup trophy and add another chapter to their remarkable football history.

Spain, meanwhile, will be aiming to stop the defending champions and claim the biggest prize in international football.
