The Oyo High Court sitting in Awe area of the state witnessed a significant development on Thursday as it struck out the case filed by the Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Yusuf Ayoola, and four other claimants against the state’s Governor, Seyi Makinde, and two other officials.
Oyo Kingmakers Sue Makinde Over Alaafin Successor
The case, which was instituted by the Kingmakers in Oyo town, popularly known as Oyo Mesi, aimed to halt the alleged interference in the selection and appointment process for the vacant stool of Alaafin of Oyo.
Notably, the absentees in the case, including Lagunna of Oyo, High Chief Wakeel Oyedepo; Akiniku of Oyo, High Chief Amuda Yusuf; Areago Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Waheed Oyetunji, and Alapo of Oyo, Chief Gbadebo Mufutau, were part of the claimants.
In response to the withdrawal of the suit by the claimants, Justice Ladiran Akintola struck out the case, but the claimants have since filed a fresh suit, numbered HOY/14/2023. The presiding Justice has indicated that the hearing date for the new suit will be communicated to both parties.
Oyo Mesi Face Internal Crisis Over Alaafin Nomination
The vacant Alaafin of Oyo stool resulted from the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who ruled for an impressive 52 years until his demise at the age of 83 in April 2022.
