Barr. Dr. Cosmas Akighir has been unanimously appointed as the Chairman of the Governing Boards of all seven Regional Development Commissions in Nigeria, following a consensus decision reached by the heads of the commissions during a meeting in Abuja.

The decision was made at a high-level gathering that brought together the chairpersons of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), North West Development Commission (NWDC), South East Development Commission (SEDC), South West Development Commission (SWDC), South South Development Commission (SSDC), Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and the North Central Development Commission (NCDC).

The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration and improving coordination among the various regional development bodies established to address Nigeria’s diverse developmental challenges.

Akighir’s appointment is being described as a move aimed at improving unity of purpose among the commissions, which often operate independently despite having similar mandates in areas such as infrastructure development, poverty reduction, environmental management, and economic empowerment. By selecting a single coordinating leader, stakeholders believe the commissions can better align their strategies and deliver more impactful results across all geopolitical zones.

The endorsement was reportedly unanimous, reflecting a shared agreement among the commission leaders on the need for a central figure who can guide joint planning and encourage cooperation. Observers say the decision signals a shift toward a more integrated approach to regional development in Nigeria, where overlapping responsibilities and fragmented execution have sometimes slowed progress.

Each of the seven commissions plays a distinct role in addressing regional needs. For instance, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) focuses heavily on environmental remediation and infrastructure in oil-producing communities, while the North East Development Commission (NEDC) has been deeply involved in post-conflict reconstruction and humanitarian support. Despite these differences, their overarching goals are similar: improving living conditions and promoting sustainable development within their respective regions.

Supporters of the new leadership structure argue that Akighir’s role will help reduce duplication of efforts and improve resource allocation. They believe that a coordinated leadership model will also enhance accountability, as it will be easier to track progress across regions and ensure that development projects align with national priorities.

His emergence has been met with positive reactions, particularly in Benue State and across the North Central region, where many see the appointment as recognition of his leadership capacity and contributions to public service. Some stakeholders also view it as an opportunity for greater inclusion of the North Central region in broader national development discussions.

However, analysts have also noted that the success of this arrangement will depend on how clearly responsibilities are defined among the commissions. While coordination is expected to improve efficiency, there are concerns that too much centralization could slow down decision-making or reduce the autonomy of individual commissions if not carefully managed.

Moving forward, expectations are high that the new coordinating leadership will focus on building stronger communication channels between the commissions, harmonizing project implementation frameworks, and establishing performance benchmarks to measure impact. If effectively implemented, this structure could represent a significant step toward improving regional development outcomes and fostering greater cooperation among Nigeria’s development institutions.
