The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olukorede Kesha, has advised motorists to seek alternative routes as repair work begins today, November 6, 2023, on the Third Mainland Bridge.

During a World Press Conference on Sunday, Kesha emphasized the closure of the Adekunle exit ramp at 9 am for a two-week rehabilitation period, followed by a five-week repair phase for all four ramps.

Highlighting the significance of public awareness, Kesha stressed the importance of keeping the bridge accessible for general use, except for those specifically seeking to connect Adekunle through the bridge. Motorists traveling to Lagos Island via the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway/Toll Gate/Ogudu axis will be unable to access Adekunle/Ebute-Metta via the Third Mainland Bridge.

FG Announces Closure of Third Mainland Bridge for Repair

“We are here to sensitise Lagosians on the forthcoming closure of Third Mainland Bridge on Monday, November 6, by 9am; the two access ramps to Adekunle will be closed to traffic.

“What that means is that if you are coming from Iyana Oworo, you can go straight. And if you are heading to Lagos Island, the bridge is still free for you.

“You can use it straight to the Island but peradventure you are going to Adekunle, you will not be able to do that if you are coming from Iyana Oworo,” she said.

To alleviate potential congestion, Kesha recommended alternative routes such as Carter Bridge, Gbagada, Ikorodu Road, Ojota, and Funsho Williams Avenue. She assured the public that signages and billboards had been strategically placed, and traffic authorities would be present to facilitate smooth vehicular movement.

During the repair period, Kesha urged motorists and other road users to remain patient and adhere to traffic regulations.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, had earlier outlined the scope of work, which encompasses resurfacing the entire bridge, replacing expansion joints, and installing solar lighting, among other crucial tasks.

Furthermore, the controller pledged the replacement of all vandalized roadway furniture, including guard rails, and urged the public to remain vigilant in reporting any acts of vandalism that could compromise communal assets.
