Lagos State says it will start charging drivers for parking on some streets before the end of 2026.

The Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) made this known during a meeting with officials of Ikeja Local Government.

According to LASPA’s General Manager, Adebisi Adelabu, the new street parking system will first begin in some areas, including Ikeja. The plan is to reduce traffic congestion, organise parking better, and create jobs for people living in those areas.

She explained that local governments used to manage parking, but all 57 LGAs and LCDAs in Lagos later handed the responsibility over to LASPA.

Adelabu also said local councils that support the project will benefit from it. She added that LASPA is open to suggestions from residents and stakeholders to help make the programme successful.

The Chairman of Ikeja LGA, Akeem Dauda, welcomed the plan and promised to support it. He also advised LASPA to properly educate residents before the scheme starts.

Lagos has long struggled with heavy traffic caused partly by vehicles parked carelessly on roadsides, especially in busy places like Ikeja, Lagos Island, Surulere, and Apapa.

Officials believe the new parking system will help improve traffic flow and make transportation in the city more organised.
