President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a significant salary increment for members of Nigeria’s armed forces, alongside the payment of three months’ salary arrears.
This development was disclosed on Friday by Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, in a statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Henshaw Ogubike.
The approval is part of Tinubu’s broader strategy to enhance the welfare of military personnel as they face the nation’s growing security challenges.
According to Matawalle, alerts for the three-month salary increment have already begun reaching military personnel, signalling the administration’s commitment to the well-being of those on the frontlines of national defense.
In addition to the salary adjustments, the President has also released funds to clear outstanding pensions and other entitlements owed to retired military personnel.
This move addresses long-standing grievances within the armed forces and has been described as a morale booster for both serving and retired officers.
The Minister of State for Defence commended Tinubu’s dedication to the military, noting that the welfare of the armed forces remains a top priority for the administration.
“Despite initial setbacks, the President has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to uplifting our military forces, ensuring they are adequately motivated to tackle the nation’s security challenges,” Matawalle stated.
He further assured retirees that addressing their outstanding pension arrears and entitlements would remain a key focus of the administration.
“The government is determined to honor the service and sacrifices of our military personnel, both past and present,” he added.
This decision is expected to significantly boost morale within the armed forces, especially as they contend with heightened insecurity across the country.
By addressing welfare issues comprehensively, the government hopes to strengthen the resolve and operational effectiveness of the military.
Observers have lauded the move as a timely intervention, particularly in light of the critical role the armed forces play in maintaining national stability.
Analysts believe the gesture will not only improve the living conditions of military personnel but also foster a renewed sense of patriotism and dedication among the ranks.
Tinubu’s administration has faced criticism for various economic challenges, but this recent decision underscores his resolve to prioritize national security and the welfare of those who safeguard it.
By ensuring prompt action on salary increments and pension arrears, the President sends a clear message of support to the armed forces as they continue their mission of securing the nation.
The approval is part of ongoing reforms aimed at addressing long-standing issues within Nigeria’s defense sector. Military personnel and retirees alike have expressed appreciation for the initiative, which they see as a positive step toward enhancing their livelihoods and professional dignity.
