Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has reinforced the state’s security apparatus by donating 31 operational vehicles to the Police and other security agencies.

The presentation, held on Monday in Asaba, was made to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as part of efforts to enhance the joint security operations in the state, now rebranded as “Operation Delta Sweep.”

Governor Oborevwori explained that the donation was necessitated by the prevailing security challenges in the country. He urged security agencies to collaborate and share intelligence to ensure an effective response to security issues in Delta State.

“In my MORE Agenda, I promised Deltans that we would enhance peace and security,” the governor stated.

“As part of this commitment, we are rebranding the operation formerly known as ‘Delta Hawk’ to ‘Operation Delta Sweep.’ This rebranding underscores our renewed focus and strategy to combat crime and foster harmony across the state.”

The governor emphasized that without security, sustainable development is unattainable. “We aim to create a secure environment where investors feel confident to invest, thereby improving the quality of life for our citizens,” he added.

The joint security task force, established in December 2020 as a response to rising violent crimes, comprises the Nigerian Army, Police Force, Air Force, Navy, DSS, and Civil Defense Corps. Since its inception, the task force has achieved significant success in tackling illegal oil bunkering, kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, and drug-related offenses.

To support its operations, the state government has now donated a total of 66 vehicles, including pickups, Sienna wagons, and Hilux trucks.

The governor expressed optimism that the upgraded fleet would bolster daily patrols, particularly during the Ember Months, and boost the morale of security personnel.

Speaking earlier during a courtesy visit by the IGP, Governor Oborevwori praised the “Safe School Program,” an initiative designed to protect educational institutions from terror attacks and violent crimes. He lauded the IGP’s exceptional leadership, noting that the program has reassured parents and guardians of their children’s safety.

In his remarks, the IGP commended the governor for his unwavering support for security agencies in the state. “Your commitment to the safety and security of Delta State is evident,” Egbetokun said. “These vehicles will be immediately deployed to enhance the operational effectiveness of the police and other agencies under Operation Delta Sweep.”

At the opening ceremony of the Police Public Relations Officers/Police Communication Experts Conference in Asaba, Governor Oborevwori highlighted the critical role of effective communication in countering misinformation and fostering transparency. Declaring the conference open, the IGP reaffirmed the Police’s commitment to fairness, accountability, and collaboration with the media to promote public trust.
