Nigeria’s Flying Eagles secured their spot in the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations with a remarkable 3-1 comeback victory over Niger Republic in the semi-final clash of the 2024 WAFU B U20 Championship, held at Stade Kegue in Lome on Sunday.
With their victory, Nigeria advances to the tournament final, where they will meet their arch-rivals, Ghana, who defeated Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in the other semi-final.
The match began with an early shock for Nigeria as their northern neighbors, Niger Republic, took the lead just nine minutes into the game. Despite this setback, the Flying Eagles, seven-time African champions, showed resilience and maintained their composure.
They gradually took control of the game, displaying tactical organization and perseverance. As they did in their previous match against Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria responded with an impressive comeback, determined to avoid an upset and secure their place in the final.
Niger nearly extended their lead in the 33rd minute, but Nigeria’s defense held firm to avert the danger. Soon after, the Flying Eagles’ persistence paid off when Clinton Jephta struck a spectacular equalizer in the 35th minute.
The goal resulted from a beautiful sequence of passes involving Kparobo Arierhi, Abba Maigari, and Nasiru Salihu, showcasing the team’s cohesion and creativity. Jephta’s strike from outside the box ignited the Nigerian side and shifted momentum in their favor.
Nigeria’s dominance continued into the second half, with the Flying Eagles mounting continuous pressure on the Junior Mena’s defense. Jephta, who had already established himself as the game’s standout performer, found the net once more in the 58th minute, putting Nigeria in the lead for the first time.
His skillful finish, combined with precise teamwork, underscored his attacking prowess. Goalkeeper Ifeanyi Harcourt also played a crucial role, making several key saves to protect Nigeria’s narrow lead.
As the match moved into stoppage time, Nigeria sealed their victory with a third goal, this time from Olalekan Alonge.
The final whistle confirmed Nigeria’s place in the championship final and their qualification for the upcoming Africa U20 Cup of Nations in 2025, setting up a high-stakes showdown against West African rivals Ghana.
NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau praised the team’s determination and progression. Reflecting on the team’s journey, he noted, “I commend the fighting spirit of the Flying Eagles in reaching the final of the WAFU B U20 Championship and in the process, winning a slot at the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations.
I watched their first match against Burkina Faso, which they lost 0-1, but the team has continued to improve with every match since then.”
The NFF President expressed confidence in the Flying Eagles’ potential to reclaim their title against Ghana, highlighting the team’s growth and resilience throughout the tournament.
With their eyes set on the championship, Nigeria’s young stars hope to bring home the title once again.
