The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the commencement of the Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates, scheduled to begin on Friday, October 25, 2024.

This development marks a significant shift in the administration of one of the most critical examinations for secondary school leavers across West Africa, as WAEC continues to adapt to the growing demand for digital solutions in education.

According to a statement released by WAEC on Tuesday, the Second Series of the WASSCE for Private Candidates will run from October 25 to December 20, 2024, giving candidates ample time to sit for their exams over this nearly two-month period.

The Council has also taken into consideration the requests of potential candidates who are yet to complete their registration process.

As a result, the registration deadline has been extended to Tuesday, October 29, 2024, providing a final opportunity for late entrants to register and participate in the examination.

In keeping with global trends and technological advancements, this year’s WASSCE for Private Candidates will follow a hybrid mode of examination delivery.

This method represents a combination of traditional paper-based exams and modern computer-based testing. Specifically, WAEC stated that candidates will be required to answer objective questions directly on-screen, leveraging the benefits of digital platforms for faster, more efficient assessment.

For the essay and practical sections, candidates will still respond using physical booklets provided by the Council.

This balanced approach allows WAEC to introduce technology in a way that maintains the integrity and rigor of the examination process, while also considering the varying levels of technological infrastructure and access across the region.

WAEC emphasized that the move to a computer-based format is designed to streamline the examination process, ensuring faster marking of objective sections and potentially quicker release of results.

The Council has recognized the need to modernize its operations in response to the increasing number of private candidates who prefer the flexibility of a computer-based exam, particularly those who may not be able to attend traditional schooling.

As part of its commitment to supporting candidates through this transition, WAEC has made the final timetable for the examination available for download on its official website, allowing candidates to adequately prepare for their respective papers.

The Council also reiterated that all candidates are required to adhere strictly to the examination guidelines to avoid issues of malpractice or misconduct.

In light of past experiences, WAEC continues to warn against any form of cheating or examination malpractice, which could result in the cancellation of results or even legal action.

Candidates are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the rules and ensure they arrive at their designated centers on time, fully prepared for the tests.

Additionally, WAEC has taken steps to ensure that exam centers are equipped with the necessary facilities to accommodate the computer-based aspect of the examination. As part of this preparation, centers have been inspected to ensure compliance with the technical requirements needed for a seamless examination experience. Candidates are advised to report any issues encountered during the exam to the appropriate authorities for swift resolution.

The introduction of the hybrid examination mode is in line with WAEC’s broader vision of improving the quality and accessibility of education in West Africa. Over the years, the Council has consistently worked to enhance the examination experience for both private and school candidates by adopting global best practices. This shift to a partially computer-based exam is expected to pave the way for future innovations in the administration of the WASSCE and other exams under WAEC’s purview.

WAEC remains committed to providing an examination process that is not only efficient but also inclusive, catering to the needs of all candidates regardless of their location or access to digital resources. The Council’s decision to extend the registration period is a testament to its understanding of the diverse circumstances of candidates and its commitment to ensuring that no eligible candidate is left out.

As the Computer-Based WASSCE for Private Candidates kicks off on October 25, 2024, WAEC encourages all participants to remain focused and prepared, taking advantage of the final timetable and other resources provided to ensure success in the examination.
