This penalty, issued by Judge Arthur Engoron, was the result of Trump’s public attack on court staff, in direct contravention of the judge’s earlier orders.
The roots of this latest conflict can be traced back to a social media post by Trump targeting the judge’s principal law clerk, which prompted an initial fine of $5,000.
Despite complying with the order to remove the post, Trump allegedly made further comments during a trial break, insinuating bias within the court. Judge Engoron swiftly deemed these remarks a blatant violation of the gag order.
