President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has celebrated Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka on his 92nd birthday, describing the renowned literary icon as a fearless advocate of good governance, justice and democratic values whose contributions have continued to influence Nigeria and the wider world.

Soyinka, one of Africa’s most respected writers and public intellectuals, marks his 92nd birthday on July 13, 2026. In a message commemorating the occasion, Tinubu praised the playwright, poet and activist for dedicating decades of his life to literature, human freedom and the struggle against oppression.

The President described Soyinka as an exceptional Nigerian whose courage, knowledge and commitment to truth have distinguished him across generations. He noted that individuals of Soyinka’s character rarely emerge, particularly those willing to challenge established conventions and speak against injustice regardless of personal consequences.

Tinubu said the Nobel laureate has consistently demonstrated an unwillingness to remain silent in the face of oppression, adding that his writings and public interventions have encouraged generations of Nigerians to question injustice and demand accountability from those entrusted with leadership.

According to the President, Soyinka remains one of Nigeria’s living repositories of history, knowledge and courage, having witnessed and participated in some of the country’s most significant political and social struggles.

Tinubu highlighted Soyinka’s remarkable achievements across several fields, noting that his influence extends beyond playwriting and literature. The President recognised him as a novelist, poet, essayist, actor, composer, documentarian and campaigner for responsible governance.

The President also recalled Soyinka’s historic Nobel Prize in Literature award in 1986, which made him the first African to receive the prestigious honour in that category. He said the achievement placed Nigeria and Africa prominently on the global literary stage while inspiring generations of African writers.

Beyond the Nobel Prize, Tinubu acknowledged several international honours associated with Soyinka’s distinguished career. These include recognition from respected literary and cultural institutions across the world, reflecting the global significance of his creative works and intellectual contributions.

For decades, Soyinka’s plays, essays and other writings have explored themes surrounding power, oppression, culture, freedom and the complexities of human society. His literary works have been studied in universities and academic institutions around the world, establishing him as one of Africa’s most influential intellectual figures.

However, Tinubu stressed that Soyinka’s legacy cannot be measured by literature alone. He recalled the writer’s longstanding opposition to military dictatorship and his active participation in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement.

The President specifically reflected on the June 12 struggle, a defining period in Nigeria’s democratic history. Tinubu recalled that both he and Soyinka were involved in the resistance against military rule and efforts to restore democratic governance in the country.

During the years of military dictatorship, Soyinka became widely known for his outspoken criticism of authoritarian leadership. His activism frequently placed him at odds with successive governments, but he continued to speak publicly about human rights, political freedom and accountability.

Tinubu praised the literary icon for maintaining his convictions during difficult periods in Nigeria’s history, describing his courage as an important example of the role citizens and intellectuals can play in protecting democratic values.

The President said Soyinka’s unwavering commitment to the Nigerian project has remained evident despite his frequent criticism of governments and political leaders. According to him, constructive criticism and intellectual engagement remain important components of national development.

He thanked Soyinka for his counsel and continued interest in Nigeria’s progress, describing his presence in the country as a valuable national gift.

Tinubu further noted that Soyinka’s influence has reached generations of writers, scholars, activists and advocates of social justice. He said many people across Africa and beyond have drawn inspiration from the Nobel laureate’s willingness to challenge oppression and defend fundamental freedoms.

The President maintained that Soyinka’s life represents a combination of artistic excellence and civic responsibility. He said the literary icon has demonstrated that writers and intellectuals can use their platforms not only to entertain or educate but also to confront important issues affecting society.

Soyinka’s literary career spans several decades and includes plays, novels, poetry collections, essays and memoirs. His writings have frequently examined political authority, cultural identity and the consequences of injustice.

His international recognition has also made him a prominent representative of African literature on the global stage. Scholars and literary critics have continued to analyse his works, while younger writers have acknowledged his influence on modern African storytelling.

Tinubu said the Nobel laureate’s intellectual contributions have helped shape important conversations about democracy, leadership and social justice in Nigeria.

The President’s birthday message also reflected on Soyinka’s reputation for independence and his willingness to criticise political leaders regardless of their affiliations. Over the years, the writer has publicly challenged both military and civilian administrations on issues relating to governance, insecurity and human rights.

Despite occasional disagreements surrounding his positions, Soyinka has remained an influential voice in national affairs. His interventions frequently generate public debate and renewed conversations about Nigeria’s political direction.

Tinubu described this enduring influence as evidence of Soyinka’s significance to the country’s intellectual and democratic development.

As Soyinka celebrates his 92nd birthday, tributes have continued to focus on his literary accomplishments, activism and contributions to public discourse. Admirers have highlighted his decades-long commitment to freedom of expression and his refusal to abandon issues he considers important to society.

The President said Nigeria should continue to appreciate individuals whose lives and careers have contributed significantly to the country’s historical development.

He noted that Soyinka’s journey offers valuable lessons for younger Nigerians, particularly those seeking to make meaningful contributions in literature, academia, activism and public service.

According to Tinubu, courage and dedication to principle remain essential qualities in building a society founded on justice and accountability.

The President also praised Soyinka’s continued faith in Nigeria despite the country’s challenges. He acknowledged that the Nobel laureate has repeatedly expressed concerns about governance and national development while remaining engaged in conversations about the country’s future.

Tinubu said such commitment demonstrates a deep belief in the possibility of a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.

The President joined writers, scholars, activists and admirers around the world in celebrating Soyinka’s profound influence and sacrifices for the country.

He wished the literary icon, popularly known as “Kongi,” many more years of excellent health and continued intellectual engagement.

At 92, Soyinka remains one of Nigeria’s most recognised cultural figures and one of Africa’s leading literary voices. His historic Nobel Prize achievement, extensive body of work and decades of activism have secured his place in the continent’s intellectual history.

Tinubu’s tribute underscores the continuing relevance of Soyinka’s contributions to literature and democratic advocacy, particularly at a time when conversations surrounding leadership, accountability and good governance remain central to Nigeria’s national discourse.

For the President, Soyinka’s longevity and continued engagement with public affairs represent a valuable opportunity for younger generations to learn from a man whose life has intersected with major moments in Nigeria’s political and cultural history.

As celebrations mark his 92nd birthday, the Nobel laureate’s legacy remains rooted not only in the books and plays he has produced but also in his persistent defence of freedom, justice and accountable leadership.

Tinubu maintained that Nigeria would continue to treasure Soyinka’s knowledge, courage and historical experience while recognising his position as a global literary icon and an enduring champion of good governance.
