A police officer on duty was stabbed to death on Wednesday by suspected thugs in Akure, the capital of Ondo State.
Sources said the officer was attacked near the Arakale area after an argument with the suspects.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the Ondo Command, Olushola Ayanlade, confirmed the incident. He explained that the attack happened early on Wednesday and not at the time reported on social media.
Ayanlade said the officer was carrying out his lawful duty when he met a group of individuals who were not cooperative. The situation quickly became violent, and one of them stabbed the officer. Emergency help was called right away.
Police officers went to the area to restore calm and arrest the attackers. Two suspects, Shina Jacob who is twenty five years old and Felix Olalekan who is thirty two years old, have been arrested.
The officer was rushed to the hospital but died despite efforts to save him.
The spokesperson described the death as a painful loss to the Command and noted that the officer died while protecting people and their property. He assured the public that the investigation is ongoing and the suspects will be taken to court when it is complete.
He also warned people not to spread false information that can cause fear or hide the truth.
He added that while the police will not tolerate wrongdoing within their ranks, anyone who attacks an officer doing a lawful duty will face strong legal action.
