In response to the economic challenges posed by the removal of fuel subsidy, the Gombe State government, led by Governor Inuwa Yahaya, announced plans to distribute palliatives to 90,000 citizens in the second phase of the exercise. Governor Yahaya made this announcement during a statewide broadcast on New Year’s Day in Gombe, addressing the impact of subsidy removal on the people and outlining measures to alleviate their hardships.

Acknowledging the rising costs of living and economic hardships resulting from the fuel subsidy removal, Governor Yahaya assured citizens that the gains of subsidy removal would be reinvested in areas fostering long-term growth and inclusive development. He expressed confidence that, together, the government and the people would weather the storms and emerge stronger.

The governor highlighted the government’s efforts over the past six months, including policies such as wage grants to civil servants, food and agricultural support, and other palliative measures aimed at cushioning the economic shocks. The first phase of the state’s food palliative intervention in August 2023 targeted 420,000 poor and vulnerable individuals.
