Sony Launches Innovative PlayStation Controller for Gamers with Disabilities

Sony is set to release a revolutionary PlayStation controller in December, designed to enhance accessibility for gamers with disabilities. This marks a significant step in addressing a long-neglected issue in the gaming industry.

The innovative controller features large buttons arranged in a circular layout, along with a joystick on one side. This thoughtful design is aimed at making gaming more inclusive and user-friendly for individuals with various disabilities.

The gaming industry giant has been under increasing pressure to confront the lack of accessible options for gamers with disabilities, despite some competitors introducing similar products in recent years.

Jeremy Lecerf, also known as Gyzmo, a passionate gamer and advocate for disability rights, expressed his enthusiasm for the new controller.

He stated,

“I wouldn’t be surprised to see able-bodied people using it,” highlighting the controller’s universal appeal.

Lecerf, who specializes in video games and advocates for disabled gamers as an ambassador for the French association HandiGamer, was invited by Sony to London to test the new device.

He himself suffers from myopathy, making him a powerful voice in the community of gamers with disabilities.

Lecerf praised Sony’s effort, describing the new controller as “extremely well thought-out.” He commended the company for its commitment to accessibility, ensuring that the controller caters to the needs of gamers with a wide range of disabilities.

The new controller “is extremely well thought-out”, according to Lecerf, because the company has tried to make it accessible to people with a range of disabilities.

“It’s good to see that the industry is really taking the plunge” on the issue of accessibility, added the 39-year-old, as he tested the “access controller” on “Stray”, an adventure video game in which the player takes on the role of a cat.

“More and more (video game) publishers are playing the game,” he noted.

A 2021 report from the UK disability equality charity Scope revealed that a staggering 66% of disabled gamers encounter obstacles when trying to enjoy video games, while 40% have purchased games that they ultimately couldn’t play due to insufficient accessibility features.

However, major studios, publishers, and manufacturers now seem to have squarely focused their attention on this issue. This newfound emphasis appears to be propelled by a combination of ethical considerations and the financial potential of catering to a more diverse gaming audience.

“Video games have enabled me to have a life that is closer to normality, to have a social life,” said Lecerf.

They are an “extremely inclusive tool that opens you up to the world,” he added.

Taking accessibility issues into account is “an industry-wide trend, not limited to PlayStation,” explained Alvin Daniel, Senior Technical Program Manager at PlayStation.

Daniel said:

We wanted not the player to adapt to the controller but the controller to adapt to the player.

“No two people experience a disability in exactly the same way,” he added.

Versatile Accessories

The innovative device offers flexibility in placement, allowing it to be positioned on a table or securely attached to a stand with the freedom to be oriented in any desired direction.

Additionally, the buttons are equipped with magnetic caps, enabling them to adapt in shape. This feature enhances ease of pressing or gripping, and users have the capability to assign a wide range of functions to these adaptable buttons.

“For me it was a bit big, and the buttons are a bit stiff to press, but you can attach external buttons to it, which is a good thing for me to have,” said Melanie Eilert, a German game player.
