Lagos state government will grant a day off to public employees on Monday, August 21, in honor of the 2023 Isese Day celebration.
This announcement was made by Hakeem Muri-Okunola, the head of service for Lagos State, over the weekend in a circular titled: “Commemoration of Year 2023 Isese Day – Declaration of Work-Free Day,” copy of which was made available to newsmen on Saturday.
The Isese Day celebration itself is scheduled for Sunday, August 20.
The Head of Service stated that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved this action as a demonstration of the state government’s ongoing dedication to offering essential assistance to traditional institutions “with a view to promoting our indigenous culture and tradition while preserving our heritage.”
The statement further read “In restating its commitment to continue to provide the necessary support to traditional institutions in the state with a view to promoting our indigenous culture and tradition while preserving our heritage, Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has graciously declared Monday, 21st August 2023, a work-free day for public servants in the state. Work will, therefore, resume on Tuesday, 22nd August at 8 am prompt.”
In July, the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs appealed to the Lagos State Government to formally acknowledge and announce August 20 as a public holiday for Isese Day in the state. During the inauguration of the state Council of Obas and Chiefs for another five-year term, these traditional leaders emphasized the significance of recognizing August 20 as Isese Day to uphold the values of democracy and religious freedom.

Recall that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State took a significant step on Friday by officially recognizing August 20 as Isese Day, a culturally important occasion in the state. As a result, he went ahead and established Monday, August 21, 2023, as an official public holiday to commemorate the first-ever celebration of Isese Day.
