Elders in Rivers State, under the banner of the Concerned Elders of Rivers State, have called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to issue an unreserved apology for his recent derogatory remarks about former Governor Peter Odili.

Odili, a respected elder statesman and founder of PAMO University of Medical Sciences, was the subject of criticism from Wike during an event at a church in Ororgwe.

In a strongly worded statement, the elders expressed their deep disappointment, describing Wike’s comments as unbecoming and a deviation from the cherished values of mutual respect and deference for elders that Rivers State upholds.

They emphasized that such conduct is unacceptable, particularly when directed at a figure of Dr. Odili’s stature, whose contributions to the state and nation are widely acknowledged.

The statement was signed by several prominent leaders of Rivers State, including:

Former Governor Celestine Omehia

Prince Uche Secondus

Former Deputy Governor Tele Ikuru

Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Austin Opara

Senator Ngoji Denton West

Former Minister of Transport, Dr. Abiye Sekibo

Senator Lee Maeba

Other signatories include Dr. Dam Jaja, Alabo David Briggs, Dr. Shedrack Akolokwu, Dr. Reginald Okeya, Ambassador Oji Ngofa, Emma Okah, Alabo Senator Adawari Pepple, Ambrose Nwuzi, and Emeh Glory Emeh.

The elders underscored the importance of respecting those who have dedicated their lives to the service of the state and the nation. They highlighted Dr. Odili’s significant contributions, particularly through his founding of PAMO University of Medical Sciences, which has enhanced access to quality medical education in the country.

The group further noted that Wike’s remarks not only disrespected Dr. Odili but also cast a shadow on the values of unity, dignity, and mutual respect that the people of Rivers State hold dear.

In their statement, the Concerned Elders of Rivers State demanded that Wike retract his comments and offer a public apology to Dr. Odili, his family, and the institution he represents. They stressed that such an apology would demonstrate humility and a commitment to fostering harmony among the people of Rivers State.

The elders concluded by urging leaders at all levels to promote decorum and civility in their public engagements, emphasizing the need to protect the legacy of mutual respect and honor for which the state is known.
