Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has said his administration has started the process of selecting who may succeed him in 2027.

In his April 2026 newsletter titled “The Business of Governance,” Makinde explained that he has been consulting with several credible individuals as part of a planned transition process. He said he would announce his decision at the right time.

Earlier, the governor asked an advisory council, led by Bolaji Ayorinde, to meet with governorship aspirants in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The council’s role is to assess the candidates and recommend a suitable person to continue his administration’s agenda.
Some of the aspirants include:
Adedeji Olajide
Nureni Adeniran
Bimbo Adekanmbi
Debo Akande
Adebo Ogundoyin
Makinde said the process is designed to give all aspirants a fair chance to present their ideas and plans.

He also noted that many residents are closely watching what will happen next and are concerned about leadership and continuity in the state.

Although he did not give a specific date, he had earlier mentioned that the party’s candidate could emerge through consensus on April 8.

The governor also spoke about the state of democracy in Nigeria. He warned against the country becoming a one-party system, saying that democracy works best when there are different opinions and strong opposition.

According to him, when opposition voices are weak or silenced, accountability suffers, and governance becomes less effective. He urged Nigerians not to stay silent but to remain involved in national discussions and democratic processes.

Makinde added that he would soon engage with people from different sectors to find ways to strengthen democracy in an inclusive and lawful manner.

He concluded by saying that democracy can only survive when citizens stay active, ask questions, and ensure that institutions serve the people.
