As part of efforts to reshape the scenery along the crucial Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the Ogun State Government launched an extensive demolition operation on Tuesday.
The targeted structures, identified as shanties and makeshift constructions in Kara, were deemed unsightly and potential havens for criminal activities.
The operation, spearheaded by Senior Special Assistant to the State Governor on Environment, Farouq Akintunde, seeks to enhance the corridor’s aesthetics and eliminate spaces often exploited by criminals. Akintunde emphasized that the endeavor is a strategic step toward positioning Ogun State as the industrial hub of Nigeria.
“Ogun State has a role to play in the economic advancement of the nation. No serious investor will come here and partner with us with all these kinds of shanties and garbage,” Akintunde noted.
Notably, during the demolition, concerns were raised about the unsanitary conditions prevailing under the Kara Bridge and along the road median, where feces and debris were observed. The cleanup initiative reflects the government’s commitment to fostering a cleaner and safer environment.
While some resistance was encountered from protesters wielding sticks, the situation was effectively managed by a robust security presence.
Policemen and operatives of the Ogun State Community Social Orientation and Safety Corps were deployed to prevent any escalation into violence, ensuring the smooth progress of the operation.
