In response to the recent political unrest in Rivers State, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has announced the appointment of Tunji Disu as the new Commissioner of Police for the state.

This decision comes in the wake of demands by protesting youths for the redeployment of Nwonyi Emeka, the former Commissioner of Police in Rivers State. Emeka has been subsequently reassigned to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The announcement was made public in a statement issued by Force spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi on Thursday morning. This decision is aimed at restoring calm in the oil-rich South-South state.

Additionally, the IGP has ordered the reassignment of 14 Assistant Inspector Generals of Police and 24 commissioners to different regions, indicating a broader restructuring within the police force.

In a similar development, CP Mohammed Barde has been transferred from the Imo State Police Command to Safer Highways at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. CP Danjuma Aboki has taken over Barde’s position in Imo State, just days before the upcoming November 11, 2023, governorship election.

The IGP has charged the newly posted officers with upholding professionalism and diligence in enforcing the policies of the Force.
