Fresh Dispute Over Authenticity of Committee Report Raises Questions

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has alleged that at least three senators did not sign the committee report that led to the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, even though their names appeared on the document.

He made this claim while responding to comments by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who had described Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension as one of the most controversial and unfortunate moments in the 10th Senate.

Speaking during an interview on AIT, Oshiomhole said some senators privately told him that they neither signed the report nor agreed with its recommendations.

According to him, they were surprised to see their names included as supporters of the decision.

He specifically mentioned Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory, saying she told him directly that she did not sign the report but later saw her name listed among those who did.

Oshiomhole explained that in normal Senate procedure, members of a committee are expected to sign a report if they agree with it. If they disagree, they can refuse to sign or submit a dissenting opinion.

However, he claimed that in this case, names of some lawmakers were added even without their approval.

He suggested that an attendance register may have been used in place of actual signatures, which he described as improper and not in line with standard legislative practice.

He also said that if even one or two senators confirmed they did not sign the report, then the matter should be taken seriously and properly investigated.

The suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan took place in March 2025 after allegations of gross misconduct and disorderly behaviour in the Senate.

The disciplinary action was also linked to her repeated accusations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Following the suspension, she was barred from entering the National Assembly complex. Her salary and allowances were stopped, and her office was sealed for the duration of the suspension.

The controversy has continued to generate public debate, with differing views from lawmakers and political observers about whether the process leading to her suspension followed proper procedure.
