A faction of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), led by Boniface Aniebonam, has asked Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to officially resign from the party if he plans to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The faction’s Kano State Chairman, Senator Masu’d el Jilbreen Doguwa, made this statement on Tuesday while speaking to journalists at a press conference in Kano.
Doguwa said Governor Yusuf is still a registered member of the NNPP because the party has not received any formal resignation letter from him.
“Abba Kabir Yusuf is still a member of the NNPP, and we respect him as such. But if he wants to move to another party, he must follow the proper process,” Doguwa said.
He explained that the governor must submit a resignation letter to the NNPP chairman in his ward, adding that no such letter has been received.
Doguwa also repeated the faction’s position that former Kano State Governor and NNPP presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is not the national leader of the party.
He said several court judgments have confirmed their claim to the leadership of the NNPP. These include rulings by Justice M.A. Hassan of the Abuja High Court, Justice Bello Kawu of the Abuja High Court, and Justice C.U. Okoroafor of the Abia High Court.
According to Doguwa, Kwankwaso stopped being a key stakeholder in the NNPP after the 2023 general elections, when he contested as the party’s presidential candidate.
He added that the NNPP in Kano State is open to members who want to remain in the party individually, but it will not accept anyone operating under the Kwankwasiyya Movement within the party.
