The Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, has distributed no fewer than 47,280 bags of rice to people living in the Kano North Senatorial District as part of efforts to support them during the holy month of Ramadan and the upcoming Sallah celebration.
The distribution exercise was officially flagged off on Tuesday at the Azman Rice Company located in the Mariri area of Kano.
The event was carried out on behalf of the senator by his Chief of Staff, Muhammad Abdallah, alongside other members of his team and aides.
According to a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, the initiative is part of the senator’s yearly tradition of providing relief materials to his constituents during important religious periods.
He explained that the gesture is aimed at easing the burden many families face, especially during Ramadan when Muslims observe fasting and place a strong emphasis on charity and helping those in need.
In the first phase of the programme, a total of 47,280 households across the 13 local government areas in Kano North each received one bag of rice.
The organisers noted that this initial phase focuses mainly on reaching people at the grassroots level, ensuring that ordinary citizens and vulnerable families are the first to benefit from the distribution.
Mudashir added that more categories of beneficiaries will be considered in the next phases of the exercise, as the senator plans to extend the support to other groups within the constituency.
Many of the beneficiaries expressed happiness and gratitude for the gesture, praising the senator for his continued support and commitment to improving the welfare of his people.
Some described the intervention as timely, especially given the rising cost of food and the economic challenges currently facing many households.
The distribution comes at a significant time for Muslims, as Ramadan is a period marked by fasting from dawn to sunset, increased devotion, and acts of kindness, including feeding the less privileged.
It is also a time when many families face additional financial pressure due to the need to prepare meals for both breaking and starting the fast.
Sallah, also known as Eid-el-Fitr, is one of the most important celebrations in Islam. It marks the end of the Ramadan fasting period and is observed with special prayers, sharing of meals, acts of charity, and visits to family, friends, and loved ones.
The festival begins on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month in the Islamic calendar, following the sighting of the new moon.
Overall, the rice distribution initiative is seen as a major relief effort aimed at supporting thousands of families and ensuring that they can observe Ramadan and celebrate Sallah with greater ease and dignity.
