The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has announced a wider investigation into the recent sharp increase in domestic airfares across Nigeria.

This follows public anger over high ticket prices charged by many local airlines, especially on domestic routes.

Many Nigerians have complained that airfares rise suddenly and unfairly, particularly during festive periods.
The Nigerian Senate has also discussed the issue and called for a full investigation.

Lawmakers accused domestic airlines of exploiting passengers and possibly working together to raise prices.

In a statement issued on Friday, the FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Ondaje Ijagwu, said the Commission has begun an expanded probe.

According to him, the investigation is meant to find out whether airlines have violated any part of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA).

The investigation is focusing on airlines operating on certain routes, especially in the South-East and South-South regions.
The FCCPC said it will take strong action if there is evidence of wrongdoing.

The Commission stressed that it is not a price control agency, but it has the legal power to stop unfair practices and protect consumers.

Ijagwu also revealed that Air Peace has gone to court to stop the FCCPC from investigating its pricing system. However, he said the Commission’s investigation will continue, regardless of the court case.

Quoting the FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman, Mr. Tunji Bello, the statement said the Commission would not hesitate to act if consumer welfare or fair competition is threatened.

Bello said that whenever the FCCPC receives complaints or finds strong evidence of exploitation, it will step in to protect Nigerians.

He added that the current investigation will review pricing patterns, reasons for fare increases, and any actions that may harm fair competition.

The FCCPC assured Nigerians that appropriate enforcement measures will be taken if any airline is found guilty of breaking the law.
