The Rivers State House of Assembly finds itself in the midst of a tumultuous crisis, triggering speculation of a potential impeachment procedure against the incumbent Governor, Sim Fubara. The political upheaval intensified on Monday when the Assembly made the unprecedented move of ousting its leader, Edison Ehie.
Explosion Rocks Rivers House of Assembly Complex
Amidst the heightened tensions, Governor Fubara made a sudden and unanticipated appearance at the Assembly Complex, leading to a chaotic scene as members of the House hastily sought safety, while law enforcement resorted to deploying tear gas outside the premises.
The atmosphere was further charged with a concurrent protest gathering outside the Complex, indicating the escalating gravity of the situation. As of the latest updates, the motives and origins of the unrest remain confusing, compounded by the recent occurrence of a fire incident at the Assembly Complex on the preceding Sunday night.
Although the connection between the fire outbreak and the ongoing political rift remains unconfirmed, speculations have been rife regarding a potential conflict between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister.
Meanwhile, Governor Fubara stated that he has not engaged in any wrongdoing that would justify his impeachment by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
“Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment,” the governor said while addressing his supporters at the Assembly Complex.
The governor, who assured the people of the state of getting the dividends of democracy, said he would speak on the matter at the appropriate time.
“Let me assure the people of Rivers that I will continue to ensure that you get the dividends of democracy. At the appropriate time I will address the press,” he said.
Speaking to his followers, who were demonstrating outside the Assembly Complex, the governor emphasized that he hadn’t undertaken any actions that would justify the Assembly initiating impeachment proceedings against him.
The incident took place several hours after a fire erupted at the Assembly Complex on Sunday night.
There was no clear evidence connecting the fire to the political conflict, but speculations of a discord between Fubara and his predecessor Nyesom Wike, currently serving as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, have been circulating for some time.
