FX: Naira Gains Slightly Against Dollar

The naira strengthened against the US dollar at the official foreign exchange market for the first time this week. According to data from FMDQ, the naira appreciated by 47 kobo, trading at ₦1,541.23 per dollar on Thursday. This was a small improvement from the ₦1,541.70 rate recorded on Wednesday.

Earlier in the week, the naira had been losing value steadily. For three consecutive days, it depreciated against the dollar, causing concern among businesses and individuals who rely on foreign exchange for their transactions.

This slight recovery comes as a relief, even though the gain is small. It reflects ongoing efforts by market regulators and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to stabilize the currency. However, many experts believe that achieving long-term stability for the naira will require addressing deeper issues in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market, such as increasing dollar supply and reducing demand pressures.

While Thursday’s improvement offers some hope, the naira is still trading at a historically low value against the dollar. Economic analysts advise businesses and individuals to remain cautious, as the foreign exchange market remains volatile. The next few days will be crucial in determining if the naira can sustain this upward trend or if it will face further pressure.
