The Federal Government has opened applications for the free registration of 250,000 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises across Nigeria, offering thousands of entrepreneurs an opportunity to formalise their businesses without paying statutory registration fees.

The initiative is being implemented through a partnership between the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria and the Corporate Affairs Commission under a nationwide business formalisation programme.

The programme is targeted at nano, micro and small business owners who are operating within the informal sector and are yet to register their businesses with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had approved the free formalisation and corporate registration of 250,000 MSMEs as part of efforts by the Federal Government to reduce barriers affecting small businesses and encourage more entrepreneurs to participate in Nigeria’s formal economy.

The initiative was highlighted during the 8th National MSME Awards held at the State House in Abuja on June 27, 2026.

Under the programme, eligible beneficiaries will receive free Business Name registration through the Corporate Affairs Commission, with registration costs covered under the government-backed initiative.

The development is expected to provide relief to small-scale entrepreneurs who have struggled to formally register their businesses due to financial constraints and other challenges associated with business documentation.

Business registration remains an important requirement for entrepreneurs seeking to build credible enterprises, open corporate bank accounts and access certain financial and business support opportunities.

However, many small businesses across Nigeria continue to operate informally, particularly traders, artisans, food vendors, fashion designers, farmers and other small-scale service providers.

The Federal Government believes the free registration programme will encourage more of these entrepreneurs to formalise their operations and become better positioned to participate in the country’s financial and regulatory system.

According to details of the programme, entrepreneurs already captured on the SMEDAN database but without CAC registration may be considered for the free registration initiative.

Business owners who are yet to register with SMEDAN are expected to create an account and complete their business profile on the agency’s official portal.

The official SMEDAN registration portal allows entrepreneurs to submit their details and register their businesses on the agency’s database.

After completing the registration process, eligible entrepreneurs may be contacted with further information concerning the CAC registration process.

The initiative builds on the existing collaboration between SMEDAN and CAC to register 250,000 MSMEs free of charge. SMEDAN previously described the partnership as an effort to remove registration barriers for entrepreneurs and support business formalisation across Nigeria.

The programme is particularly significant at a time when many Nigerian entrepreneurs are facing rising operating costs, limited access to affordable credit and increasing pressure from the country’s challenging economic environment.

For many small business owners, the cost of formal registration may appear less urgent compared with immediate expenses such as rent, transportation, electricity, raw materials and other operational costs.

As a result, thousands of businesses continue to operate without formal registration despite the potential benefits associated with having a legally recognised business name.

Through the free CAC registration programme, the government hopes to remove part of the financial burden and provide eligible entrepreneurs with an opportunity to secure formal business documentation.

SMEDAN has continued to promote formal business registration as a pathway to accessing government and private-sector support. The agency says registered entrepreneurs may gain access to opportunities involving funding, grants, training and other business development programmes.

The latest application push has attracted attention among Nigerian entrepreneurs, particularly small business owners seeking opportunities to formalise their enterprises without additional registration expenses.

Interested applicants have been advised to use official government platforms and avoid individuals claiming they can guarantee selection in exchange for payment.

The programme is specifically presented as a free registration initiative for eligible beneficiaries, making it important for entrepreneurs to exercise caution when dealing with agents or unofficial platforms demanding money.

Applicants should ensure that the personal and business information submitted during registration is accurate, as incorrect details could potentially affect further processing.

Entrepreneurs who already have SMEDAN accounts can sign in to their profiles, while new business owners can create an account and complete the required registration information.

The Federal Government’s move comes amid broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s MSME sector, which remains a major source of economic activity and livelihood for millions of citizens.

Small businesses operate across virtually every sector of the Nigerian economy, including agriculture, fashion, technology, transportation, food production, retail and professional services.

Despite their importance, many MSMEs continue to face challenges ranging from inadequate financing to poor infrastructure and limited access to formal markets.

Business formalisation is seen as one step towards improving the ability of entrepreneurs to build structured businesses and take advantage of available opportunities.

With applications now open for the free registration of 250,000 MSMEs, interested business owners are encouraged to register through SMEDAN’s official platform and monitor their accounts and official communication channels for further instructions.

The free CAC registration programme could provide a major opportunity for thousands of Nigerian entrepreneurs seeking to give their businesses legal recognition and improve their prospects for long-term growth.

For business owners who have delayed registration because of cost, the initiative presents an opportunity to join Nigeria’s formal business ecosystem without bearing the statutory registration fees covered by the programme.
