Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, is currently facing detainment in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged impropriety during his tenure.
Emefiele was picked up by EFCC operatives Thursday night at the National Headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, shortly after his release from the Department of State Services’ custody.
Emefiele Arraignment on New Charges Stalled
While fresh charges may be filed against Emefiele, the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, could not be reached for official confirmation. Emefiele had previously been in DSS custody since June after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu, leading to the appointment of Folashodun Shonubi as the Acting Governor.
Although initially arraigned on charges of illegal possession of firearms, which were later withdrawn, Emefiele now faces a new 20-count charge for alleged conspiracy in procurement fraud. Arraignment has been delayed twice, and reports suggest that Emefiele proposed a plea bargain, including resignation and asset relinquishment.
On September 22, the CBN officially confirmed Emefiele’s resignation following the appointment of Olayemi Cardoso as the new CBN Governor.
