Members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Cross River State have chosen Dr. Effiong Nyong as the party’s candidate for the 2027 governorship election through a voice vote.
The exercise took place on Friday at the party’s state secretariat on Diamond Road in Calabar, where party members gathered to confirm him as the only aspirant.
Chairman of the electoral committee, Dr. MacFarlane Ejah, who also serves as the party’s state secretary, supervised the process. Members of the screening committee and other party officials witnessed the exercise.
Ejah said the process followed the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to him, the party officially confirmed and presented Nyong as its candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
Speaking after his emergence, Nyong, a veteran broadcaster and former state chairman of the party, said he decided to contest again because of his desire to improve governance and reverse what he described as the decline in the state.
He said Cross River was once known for high standards in education, sports and public service, but claimed that progress had slowed in recent years.
Nyong expressed concern over poverty and underdevelopment and called for collective efforts to improve the state’s future.
He also criticised what he described as multiple taxes, saying they have made life difficult for residents and discouraged businesses and investors from operating in the state.
