Real Madrid have said they submitted “all available evidence” to UEFA to support Vinicius Junior’s complaint of racist abuse during their Champions League match against Benfica.

The incident happened on Tuesday during the first leg of the knockout play-off match in Lisbon. The game was stopped for about 10 minutes after Vinicius told the referee that Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni called him a “monkey” during an argument on the pitch.

Prestianni has denied the accusation. During the confrontation, he was seen covering his mouth while speaking. The argument happened after Vinicius celebrated a goal by dancing in front of the Benfica supporters.

UEFA announced on Wednesday that it has opened an investigation into the alleged discriminatory behaviour.

Real Madrid released a statement describing the incident as “unacceptable racism.” The club said it has provided all the evidence it has to UEFA and thanked the football community for supporting Vinicius.

The Brazilian forward has faced several cases of racist abuse since joining Real Madrid in 2018.

Benfica also released a statement defending Prestianni. The Portuguese club described the allegations as a “defamation campaign” against the player. Benfica manager Jose Mourinho also questioned Vinicius’ goal celebration.

UEFA is expected to review the evidence and decide on the next steps.

UEFA will now review the statements from both clubs, the match officials’ report, and any available video footage before reaching a decision. If the allegations are proven, disciplinary action could follow in line with European football’s anti-racism regulations. The governing body has repeatedly stated that it maintains a zero-tolerance stance against discrimination.

The incident has once again brought the issue of racism in football back into focus, especially in high-profile competitions like the UEFA Champions League. Vinicius has previously spoken out about the emotional toll such episodes take on players.

As the investigation continues, attention will remain on UEFA’s next move, with fans and stakeholders across the football world awaiting a firm and transparent outcome.
