In a message to Nigerians and football fans, the former Super Eagles captain said his journey with the national team began when he was very young.
At one point, he was invited to play for Nigeria’s U-20, U-23 and senior teams at the same time. Despite the pressure and constant travel, he said he never complained.
Musa said wearing Nigeria’s green and white jersey was always an honour and something he never took lightly. According to him, he never hesitated whenever Nigeria called him to serve.
During his career, Musa played 111 matches for the Super Eagles, making him the most capped player in Nigerian football history.
He described the achievement as a great honour and said he always tried to give his best, whether the team was winning or struggling.
One of the biggest moments of his career was Nigeria’s victory at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He also spoke proudly about scoring goals at the FIFA World Cup, especially against Argentina and Iceland.
Musa scored four World Cup goals, making him Nigeria’s highest goalscorer in World Cup history.
Musa also reflected on his time as Super Eagles captain. He said the role taught him responsibility, patience and how to put the team first.
According to him, leadership was not about authority, but about supporting teammates, encouraging young players and protecting the image of the national team, even during difficult periods.
He thanked his former teammates, coaches, team officials and administrators for believing in him throughout his career. He also expressed deep gratitude to Nigerian fans at home and abroad for their constant support.
