ADC Leadership Dispute: Court Shifts Judgment Date by 24 Hours

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rescheduled its ruling in a politically sensitive case involving the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to April 14, 2026.

The judgment, which was originally set to be delivered on Monday, was postponed for 24 hours by Justice Musa Suleiman Liman. The judge cited other official engagements as the reason for the short adjournment.

The suit was instituted by a member of the House of Representatives from Kogi State, Hon. Leke Abejide, who is challenging the emergence of former Senate President, David Mark, and former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, as leaders of the ADC.

In the case, Abejide is asking the court to stop both politicians from parading themselves as the party’s chairman and secretary. He is also urging the court to nullify what he described as an unlawful transfer of leadership within the party.

The lawmaker joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the party’s former national chairman Ralph Nwosu, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as defendants in the matter.

He is further requesting an order directing INEC not to recognise Mark and Aregbesola as leaders of the party, arguing that their appointment did not follow due process and the provisions of the Electoral Act.

However, the defendants, including the ADC, David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, Ralph Nwosu, and INEC, have all urged the court to dismiss the suit. They maintained that the matter relates strictly to the internal affairs of a political party, which they argue is not justiciable in court.

They also contended that the court lacks jurisdiction to entertain the case and insisted that the leadership of the party was properly constituted during a National Executive Committee meeting held in July 2025.

According to them, the claims by Abejide have no legal foundation and amount to an academic exercise, as the current leadership structure of the ADC remains valid and recognised.

The court has now fixed April 14, 2026, for its ruling on the matter, which continues to draw political attention within the party and beyond.
