Biden: A targeted attack on a Gaza medical facility resulted in the deaths of numerous Palestinians, escalating tensions in the Middle East and adding pressure on U.S. President Joe Biden as he prepares to visit Israel on Wednesday to demonstrate solidarity in the ongoing conflict against Hamas.
According to Palestinian authorities, an airstrike from Israel struck the hospital, leading the Palestinian Authority’s health minister to accuse Israel of perpetrating a “massacre.” Israel, on the other hand, attributed the explosion at Al-Ahli al-Arabi hospital to a botched rocket launch by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group, which denied any involvement.
The assertions regarding the disaster could not be confirmed, intensifying an already volatile region following the Hamas October 7 incursion into communities in southern Israel, resulting in the death of at least 1,300 individuals.

Ashraf Al-Qudra, the spokesperson for the Palestinian ministry, mentioned that rescue teams were continuing to retrieve bodies from the debris.
Al Jazeera broadcasted footage revealing a chaotic scene as rescue workers searched through blood-stained rubble for survivors. The footage displayed rescuers and civilians carrying at least four victims in body bags. While a Gaza civil defense chief reported a death toll of 300, sources from the health ministry estimated it to be at 500.
Biden’s intricate diplomatic journey to the Middle East aimed to stabilize the region and reinforce humanitarian aid for Gaza. However, following the airstrike, Jordan scrapped a scheduled summit with the U.S. president, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Abbas also called off his meeting with Biden, while Palestinian security forces employed tear gas and stun grenades to disperse anti-government demonstrators in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah amid mounting public discontent.
Demonstrations also occurred outside Israel’s embassies in Turkey and Jordan, as well as in the vicinity of the U.S. embassy in Lebanon, prompting security forces to use tear gas against the protesters.

Prior to the hospital attack, health officials in Gaza reported that at least 3,000 individuals had perished during Israel’s 11-day intensive bombing campaign, initiated in response to the group’s unexpected incursion, resulting in nearly 200 individuals being taken hostage in Gaza.
