ASUU Warns FG Over Delay in Implementing 2026 Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned the Federal Government that it may take serious action if agreements reached in 2026 are not fully implemented.

ASUU said hopes raised after the agreement was unveiled on January 14, 2026, are beginning to fade because the government has not fulfilled key promises.

Speaking on Wednesday, ASUU Kano Zone Coordinator, Professor Abdulkadir Muhammad, said the government has failed to set up the Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC), which was meant to oversee and ensure proper execution of the agreement.

He explained that implementation has been slow and uncoordinated, with only a few state governments carrying out the agreement.

According to ASUU, some federal universities have only implemented parts of the agreed salary and allowance structure, including:

Consolidated Academic Tool Allowances (CATA)

Earned Academic Allowances (EAA)

Professorial Allowances (PA)

The union said these benefits were supposed to be fully merged into the Consolidated University Academic Salary Scale (CONUASS) and paid as part of monthly salaries.

ASUU also accused some state governments and university authorities of ignoring the agreement despite participating in negotiations.

The union urged both federal and state governments to respect the agreement to maintain peace in Nigerian universities.

ASUU further raised concerns over delays in establishing the proposed National Research Council (NRC).

It also questioned the Federal Government’s plan to create a National Research and Innovation Development Fund (NRIDF), announced by the Minister of Education, saying ASUU was not involved in developing the proposal.

Professor Muhammad said the union was surprised by the announcement of a proposed $500 million funding plan without reference to the research and development provisions already contained in the agreement.

ASUU said it supports efforts to improve research funding but warned against any move that could alter or weaken the original goals of the agreement.
