Chelle Breaks Silence on Marseille Job Rumours

Super Eagles head coach, Éric Chelle, has publicly addressed mounting speculation linking him with a potential return to French football as head coach of Olympique de Marseille.

Rumours recently circulated that the Ligue 1 club had identified Chelle as one of the possible candidates to take over following the dismissal of Italian tactician Roberto De Zerbi.

The speculation gained traction after Chelle enhanced his reputation by guiding Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations — a performance widely praised by fans and football analysts.

However, speaking on the Histoires de Foot Podcast, the 48-year-old Malian coach moved to clarify the situation, downplaying suggestions of serious negotiations with the French giants.

According to Chelle, there was no formal approach from Marseille. Instead, he explained that his representatives made initial contact with the club when the vacancy became public knowledge.

“At that moment, OM were looking for a coach. So my agency got in touch with the club to propose my profile. After that, we didn’t take any further steps,” Chelle stated.

His remarks suggest that while his name may have been presented for consideration, discussions never advanced beyond that preliminary stage.

Marseille have since appointed former Senegal international Habib Beye as their new head coach, effectively ending any lingering speculation about Chelle’s possible move to the Stade Vélodrome.

Chelle remains under contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for another year. Since taking charge of the Super Eagles, he has focused on rebuilding the squad, introducing tactical discipline and fostering competition within the team.

His immediate priority is preparing Nigeria for upcoming international fixtures, including World Cup qualifiers and continental competitions.

Despite persistent reports linking him with European opportunities, Chelle appears committed to his project with Nigeria, at least for the duration of his current deal.

His clarification may now help calm uncertainties surrounding his future as the Super Eagles continue their preparations for the challenges ahead.
