Although it is not clear how the fire began, reports say soldiers have been patrolling the area since the killing of their colleagues.

Residents of the coastal community also fled for fear of reprisal by soldiers, as arrests have been made by soldiers led by the general officer commanding 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Jamal Abdussalam.

Condemning the retaliatory attack, netizens said that a retaliatory attack on the community do not compensate for the death of the soldiers.

“The Nigerian Army has all the resources and personally to fish out the people who killed our soldiers in less than 24 hours, but no! Because it is Nigeria and we have normalised barbaric acts, the next line of action is to kill innocent civilians, women, men, children of whom the actual culprits might not even be among. To say I am highly disappointed is to say the least! If someone reputable lends a voice, I believe the UN would condemn this, this is tooooooooo shameful!”

“This has become a norm by the army. Once there is a community clash, they come in, trigger the youth and once the youth retaliate or resist they use the opportunity to burn down houses in the village. This was the same pattern they used in my place in Anambra. My fathers house was burnt down too. I can’t even begin to explain the pain I feel every time I think of all that happened. It’s traumatic and one day I will be able to narrate the story and ask the Nigerian army questions.”
