Michael Okpara University of Agriculture has announced its indefinite closure with immediate effect following a dramatic escalation in students’ protest against rising fees.
The university, cited safety concerns as the major reason behind the closure during the announcement on Tuesday.
The university administration in a statement said the clashes between students and security forces left property damaged and some students injured.
The institution also claimed that “miscreants took over the University,” damaging property and vehicles.
However, student alleged that the police use live ammunition and teargas to disperse the protests.
Reports of injuries amongst students have also emerged, adding to the growing tension.
Adding to the chaos, students reportedly retaliated by damaging university facilities, including the administration block. The extent of the damage remains unclear, but it underscores the escalating tensions and the breakdown of order on campus.
Efforts to reach Vice Chancellor Professor M. O. Iwe for comment regarding the alleged use of force and students’ claims proved unsuccessful.
However, the university’s claims regarding student participation are contested. While the statement asserts that “more than 70% of the students had paid their fees and were peacefully taking their examinations,” student leaders maintain that the fee increase is unaffordable for many, leading to widespread resistance.
All students are now required to vacate the university premises by 5:00 PM today, Tuesday, February 6th, 2024.
