Former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed confidence in clinching the vice-presidential ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), which, according to him, would eventually pave the way for Kano State to produce Nigeria’s President.

This is even as reports emerged today that the NDC has concluded the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for its 2027 presidential ticket, with 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, reportedly emerging as the only aspirant to purchase the forms.

Party insiders told newsmen that Obi was the sole applicant before the deadline for presidential form collection closed on Sunday, May 17, 2026, effectively placing the former Anambra State governor in a pole position ahead of the party’s selection process.

Early this month, Obi and Kwankwaso defected from the African Democratic Congress (NDC) to the NDC. Speculations are rife that the duo joined the NDC on the condition that they would contest the 2027 presidential election on a joint ticket, with the former Anambra governor as presidential candidate and the former defence minister as his running mate.

Speaking while being interviewed on Premier Radio over the weekend, Kwankwaso said, “By God’s grace, the next election will be unlike anything that has ever happened in our state and country, especially if I secure the ticket and my name is on the ballot.

“Since the First Republic, despite our struggles and political wisdom, Kano has never produced a vice president. This is both disappointing and deeply saddening, but by God’s grace, it will be corrected.

“Kano state will rightfully secure this position, which will open the door for our state to eventually produce the president of this country.

“People from the south who understand what is happening are already registering with our party. The north, especially the north-west, must be careful and ensure they do what is right so they do not make a decision they will deeply regret.”

Nigeria has long operated an informal power rotation arrangement between the north and south, with many arguing that a southerner should complete eight years in office by 2031 so that power can return to the north.

Kwankwaso suggested that if the former Anambra governor is elected president in 2027 and he becomes vice-president, the arrangement would position him to succeed Obi (who has vowed to serve for a single term) in 2031.
