What Ojukwu Told Me About Biafra – Orji Kalu

Femi Fabunmi

Abia North senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has shared what the late General Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu told him shortly before his death.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Kalu said that Ojukwu believed the first push for Biafra was necessary, but that the second agitation currently going on is not needed.

Kalu dismissed claims that he is “less Igbo” than others. He explained that he was very close to Ojukwu and visited him regularly, and that Ojukwu also came to stay in his hometown.

He said Ojukwu advised him that fighting for Biafra again would only lead to harm and suffering for the same people who are asking for it.

Kalu condemned violent actions linked to agitation, such as attacking traders and stopping business activities, especially during Monday sit-at-home incidents.

According to him, these actions only destroy Igbo people, their businesses, and their communities.

He said those who still want Biafra should put down weapons and approach the matter peacefully by discussing, negotiating, and possibly asking for a referendum.

He added that even Ojukwu’s wife, Bianca, agrees with the same position and would not support the destruction of Igbo land.

Kalu urged young people to stop violence and allow Igbo communities to grow again.

“There is no more strong business activity in Igbo land,” he said. “People are suffering, things are hard. How do we survive if we keep destroying ourselves?”

He advised that peace and unity should be restored to the region.
