President Bola Tinubu has said Nigeria has overcome its recent economic and security challenges and is now moving in the right direction.
He also promised that his government will create state police to help tackle insecurity at the local level.
The President spoke on Monday during an interfaith breaking of fast at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The event was attended by about 20 governors, two deputy governors, government officials and religious leaders. The gathering took place as Muslims observe Ramadan and Christians mark Lent.
Tinubu said the country has passed through difficult times but insisted that the reforms introduced by his administration are beginning to show positive results.
“We are out of the woods. We are out of the dark tunnel of uncertainty,” he said.
He admitted that many Nigerians have faced economic hardship and security problems. However, he explained that the tough decisions taken by his government were necessary to put the country on a stronger path.
According to him, unity and cooperation among leaders are important to move the country forward. He encouraged political leaders to remain focused and committed to national development.
The President repeated his promise to decentralise policing by creating state police. He said this would allow state governments to respond quickly to security challenges in their communities.
“To those unemployed, what I promise, we will establish State Police to combat security in our Local Government,” he said.
Tinubu also spoke about the significance of Ramadan and Lent happening at the same time. He said the period represents discipline, sacrifice, faith and love for one another. He urged Nigerians to pray together and support each other regardless of religious differences.
He thanked state governors for working closely with the Federal Government and praised their commitment to national progress. He also advised them to ensure that development reaches the grassroots, especially young people.
Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, who spoke on behalf of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, said the coincidence of Ramadan and Lent is special and should remind Nigerians to stay united. He praised the President’s reform policies and promised continued support from governors.
The event was the third annual interfaith fast-breaking organised by President Tinubu. Prayers were offered by religious leaders at the gathering.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila and several governors were also present.
