The Nigerian Senate on Thursday confirmed the nomination of Dr. Aminu Maida as the new Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The confirmation follows a thorough screening conducted by the Senate Committee on Communication, with unanimous approval.

Senator Aliyu Ikra Bilbis, the committee chairman, presented the report during the plenary session, emphasizing that Maida’s nomination aligns with Section 8(1) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Act, 2003. He assured the Senate that Dr. Maida met all the necessary criteria, passing security clearance and demonstrating the qualifications, professional experience, competence, and capacity required for the role.

Importantly, Senator Bilbis highlighted that there were no petitions against Dr. Maida’s nomination, further solidifying the committee’s recommendation for confirmation.

Following the committee’s presentation, the Senate swiftly confirmed the appointment of Dr. Aminu Maida as the Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC.

Dr. Maida, previously serving as the Executive Director, Technology and Operations at Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. With an M.Eng in Information Systems Engineering from Imperial College London and a PhD in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from the University of Bath, UK, he has a robust academic background.

During his screening, Dr. Maida outlined his commitment to enhancing telecom services in the most remote areas of the country. If confirmed, he expressed his dedication to improving coverage and connectivity, showcasing a strategic vision for advancing Nigeria’s telecommunications space.

“The NCC under my leadership, if confirmed as Executive Vice Chairman by the Senate, would ensure that network subscribers get value for their money, drastic reduction in drop calls, improved network coverage and rural connectivity.

“Technological innovation for stoppage of hacking into subscribers’ accounts would also be at the front burner of actions to be taken in no distant time,” he said.
