Senegal forward Ismaïla Sarr may have seen his country’s 2026 FIFA World Cup journey come to an end, but the winger leaves the tournament with a place in African football history.

Sarr finished the competition with five World Cup goals, drawing level with Cameroon legend Roger Milla as the second-highest African goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history. Only Ghanaian great Asamoah Gyan, who scored six goals across three World Cup tournaments, remains ahead of him.

The 28-year-old was one of Senegal’s standout performers at the tournament, consistently delivering in front of goal and helping the Teranga Lions make a strong impression on the global stage. His goals not only boosted Senegal’s campaign but also saw him become his country’s all-time leading scorer at the World Cup.

However, Senegal’s hopes of a deeper run were dashed following a narrow 3-2 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 32, bringing an end to their quest for World Cup glory. Despite the disappointment, Sarr’s individual achievements have emerged as one of the major positives for the West African nation.

With his tally of five goals, Sarr joins an elite group of African football icons whose performances have left a lasting mark on the World Cup.

Africa’s all-time leading World Cup scorers:

🇬🇭 Asamoah Gyan – 6 goals

🇨🇲 Roger Milla – 5 goals

🇸🇳 Ismaïla Sarr – 5 goals

Although Senegal are no longer in the tournament, Sarr’s exploits in 2026 have strengthened his reputation as one of Africa’s finest forwards and ensured his name will be remembered among the continent’s greatest World Cup performers.
