Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State, is scheduled to commission the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line Overpass Bridge in Yaba on Thursday.
The much-anticipated overpass bridge, according to a statement by Kola Ojelabi, the Head of Communication at the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), is strategically designed in a T-shape to effectively channel traffic from Murtala Muhammed Way into Ojuelegba Road and vice versa, creating a smoother flow for commuters within the Yaba-Ojuelegba Axis and other parts of the state.

The decision to construct the Yaba Overpass Bridge, one of the four new bridges erected along the Red Line rail alignment, stems from the imperative to eliminate the existing challenges posed by the intersection of vehicular/pedestrian and train traffic.
Prior to the construction, the Murtala Muhammed level crossing frequently caused substantial delays in train operations, posing a significant risk for accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians.
The completion of this pivotal infrastructure marks a significant milestone in the Governor’s commitment to delivering an efficient and safe transportation system for Lagosians. Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, the Managing Director of LAMATA, emphasized that the overpass bridge’s successful completion will not only mitigate the occurrence of accidents at level crossings but will also ensure a seamless and unimpeded movement for the Red Line trains, which are expected to operate at a high frequency.
“We have completed three of the overpasses, Oyingbo, Yaba and Ikeja with the Mushin due for completion by the end of the year. The Federal Ministry of Transport has given assurance to start the four they are expected to construct very soon,” she explained.
