OAU Fraud Saga: EFCC Bows to Pressure Over ‘Fear’ of Lawsuit

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have deleted all posts on the arrest of the 69 Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, following lawsuit threat by aggrieved Nigerians.

It would be recalled that the anti-graft agency in the wee-hours of Wednesday raided outside campus hostels arresting over sixty-nine students whose names and images were published on social media causing an outrage.

Aggrieved by the commission’s action, angry Nigerians, presumed to be alumnus of the school threatened to sue the agency for deliberately exposing the government names/images of the arrested students and tainting their digital footprints, and thereby damaging their reputations.

The Student Union also stormed the zonal office of the anti-graft agency at Iyaganku, Ibadan on Wednesday, which saw the released of only 58 students.

However, in a swift turn of event on Thursday, checks on the verified Facebook, X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram pages of the EFCC showed that the previous posts on the arrest of the suspects could not be found and have been totally removed.

In the deleted posts, the EFCC had on Wednesday said,

“They (the 69 suspects) were arrested on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at the Oduduwa Estate area of Ile-Ife, Osun State, following actionable intelligence on their suspected involvement in fraudulent Internet-related activities. Credible intelligence linked the Oduduwa Estate with activities of suspected internet fraudsters.”
